Summary On 14 June 2008, on the way back to Rangoon from Chay Chaung village in Bogale Township in the Irrawaddy delta region, members of The Group That Buries The Dead were arrested by Military Affairs Security (MAS). Before their arrest, they had helped to gather and bury or cremate over 200 bodies in the Irrawaddy Delta area. The group was led by Aung Kyaw San and Dr Nay Win, both former political prisoners. Dr Nay Win has already spent 15 years in jail. At the time of arrest, Aung Kyaw San was publisher of the Tribune Journal. He has previously spent 6 years in jail. A number of young people were also arrested for participating in the group’s activities, including Dr Nay Win’s daughter Phyo Phyo Aung and fellow students and members of the All Burma Federation of Student Unions (ABFSU) Shein Yazar Tun, Lin Htet Naing aka Aung Thant Zin Oo, and Phone Pyeit Kywe. All of the students were involved in the protests at the time of the Saffron Revolution in September 2007, but went into hiding at the time of the crackdown on the monks. Summary The Asian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) has obtained detailed information about the case of a monk in Burma who is being tried without evidence for insulting religion. The monk, U Sandadhika, went like other onlookers to the outside of the court where Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and her co-defendants were being tried in August. Afterwards a group of unidentified men picked him up and took him into custody where they accused him of planning to immolate himself in protest. They have no evidence to back the charge and the only witnesses in the case, which is continuing, are police. The detainee has been forcibly disrobed and assaulted in custody, resulting in a hernia.

Summary mainteThe abuse of land and property seizer serves a duel purpose for Burmese army units. First, having enacted a policy of “self reliance”, the SPDC encourages its units to gather any resources they can from area villagers, ostensibly to keep nance costs of their own unit down. Second, the seizer of the few resources villagers possess works towards the previously stated SPDC goal of undercutting village capacities to survive, thus denying insurgent groups opportunities to gather resources for themselves.

Summary “My name is Ma S—S— and I live in Shwe Pyi Tha quarter in Rangoon. I have one brother and two younger sisters who live with my parents. My father works as a trader and my mother is a house wife. Before I came here I worked in a factory and was paid 10,000 kyat per month. However, that small amount of money is not enough to provide the financial support my family needs to survive. Therefore, I decided to quit my job and work as a waitress in the club. “While I was working in the Club, I met with Ko Myo Gyi (or) Ko Kyi Win from Waitonchaing village, Thanbyuzayat Township and I ended up marrying him. When I married him I did not know that he was working for a group involved in the sex industry. But I found out when I arrived at Thanbyuzayat Town, and was extremely shocked and tried to divorce him. But I had no one to turn to, and he had told me to open a small restaurant at Three Pagodas Pass. Therefore, I came to Three Pagodas Pass with him. Moreover, my husband also selected five women from Thanbyuzayat and brought them to work with us.

Summary “We worked at the seafood factory in Maharchai and we wanted to change jobs to work as domestic workers in Bangkok. Consequently we got in touch with a Karen broker, U Shwe Mi, who was in Tak Province and we asked for his help in finding jobs for us. Instead he asked his friend, a Thai broker, to find jobs for us. The Thai broker sent a taxi driver to pick us up, whereupon he drove us to a building in an isolated area. The Thai brokers and taxi drivers had formed a collaborative group. When we arrived, it was very silent and they were the only ones there. The group then gang raped us. I (Naw H—) tried to escape from them, but I could not and they began to beat me. After they raped us, we said to the broker that we had relatives in Bangkok and wanted to contact to them. Although he allowed us to contact our relatives, the broker told us that if we wanted to be set free we must pay 5,000 baht each.
